Sparkler_edited.jpg
i felt like i was in another realm as i painted this painting, bc the process felt dreamy beautiful clear and smooth. unlike any painting before or since.

the immediate focus in this work is obviously a plane and its ascension- a piper super cub airplane, a plane that was a favorite of my pilot poet father's and one that i took many joyful lucky hours of flying lessons in with him.

and when i conjure this piper cub airplane as 'emerging triumphantly from the center of a dandelion' it emerges within the senses- almost in the periphery of our waking world.
it is both a plane too small to see, and one the size of a galaxy. it is a sparkle in the corner of your immediate view on a hike, or driving through an unfamiliar town or countryside.
it is a flash of a spirit who is a friend.

the excitement and color burst of the planes movement upward represents a myriad of things to me: not only a basic and true appreciation of the wonderful machine itself, but also of things we dont necessarily have language for: a flash of magic -of memory -of cognition -of warmth - perhaps the spark of an angel- a fairy - just an otherworldly accompaniment of sorts - an unexplained wave of presence and calm. it's actually hard to explain- which is exactly why i painted it!

there are elements of this painting that express breaking free from something heavy- the release of something that no longer serves you-

for me, this painting manifested as a triumphant blessing- and absolutely parallels with an acceptance of grief, and the clear arrival of a reckoning with grace.

and i realized i sometimes (saw? felt?) these quite comforting magical angel fairy flash sparkle visits, either tangible- in my periphery -or wrapped within a memory or a smell, or kind gesture, and that they WERE IN FACT EVERYWHERE, after this reckoning with grief and grace, bc i had opened up -looked up - looked inward and looked around- and realized i was ready to both recognize and receive such grace.

ultimately-it has been such a beautiful transition. and such an arrival, after such an unexpected ascension.
i truly hope you feel that in this piece.
