did you know that hummingbirds are the smallest bird AND the only bird that can fly backwards?

ok well me too and i love them.

i painted this piece bc ive been thinking of these teeny superheroes a lot lately, as their arrival every season brings me a guaranteed and triumphant sense of joy. hummingbirds inspire me to no end.

i had no idea that they mostly travel alone when migrating, which is a long journey that can be up to 600 miles!

so just think of that- a tiny tiny creature who weighs no more than a nickel- flying all alone hundreds and hundreds of miles, NON STOP! every year, following it's instincts and braving everything- weather, fatigue, thirst, hunger, predators, etc etc- all for a survival that specifically involves enjoying warmer weather and abundant nectar!

AND JUST THINK HOW DELICIOUS THAT FIRST TASTE OF NECTAR MUST BE!

or that first bit of any hydration -

after such a long voyage!

and so that, my friends, is what this piece is about.

that VERY moment after the first taste,

the bliss rush joy ecstasy relief and celebration

of that very first, real and long draw of sweet sweet nectar.

mere fresh seconds after a holy sweet and nourishing reward, after such an unbelievably hard and impressive journey.

OH! and the jimmies on top of this hummingbird sundae school treat is this fun fact :

a flock of hummingbirds can be called any of these things: a bouquet, a glittering, a hover, a shimmer, or a tune.

i mean- how wonderful is that?!! (hint, there is no answer bc the wonder is limitless)

SO THE BADASSERY OF THIS TINY CREATURE CANNOT BE OVERSTATED.

and i could not love hummingbirds any more than right now.

i truly hope you get an inspirational kick out of this latest piece, and as always, thank you so much for reading and looking.
